Last Post: Argentina excellent example for our economy
An eye-opening article by Alexander Downer about the President of Argentina who turned his country around by embracing liberal principles (“Why Javier Milei is today’s most exciting politician”, 28/7). I hope Sussan Ley takes notice.

It’s no use Anthony Albanese reading Alexander Downer’s enlightening article on Argentina’s gutsy new President; but it should find pride of place on Sussan Ley’s fridge door.

“Super tax ‘a risk to 29 Labor seats’ ” (28/7) validates the quip that the “hip-pocket nerve remains the most politically sensitive part of the voter”.

Thank you, Saba Vasefi (“Don’t be gulled by Iran’s apologists – this is a terror state”, 28/7), for your astute depiction of Iran as a terror state.

In linking the support for a Palestinian state to Israel’s future security, the Prime Minister has taken a stand with which we all agree (“PM cools on Palestine statehood”, 28/7).

As it has been reported that Hamas is commandeering aid to resell to Palestinians, would it not make sense to embed homing technology in the cargoes to identify terrorist movements and their warehouses?

Evidently, Australia doesn’t need to defend itself with friends like the UK and the US “on tap” when needed (“UK to China: ‘it’s all the way with Aussie allies’”, 28/7). Please take note, China.

I wouldn’t get too excited about Britain deploying the HMS Prince of Wales as a means of “upholding international law in the Indo-Pacific”. Students of history will recall the immense human tragedy befalling its predecessor in December 1941.

Taxing unrealised capital gains is a bad tax in principle and it disproportionately penalises self-managed super funds. As SMSFs have been used extensively by farmers and small businesses (who don’t vote Labor anyway), this “modest” tax is bad policy but good politics, apparently.
