Over the Easter weekend we were bombarded with TV ads by Labor throwing mud at the Liberals with lies and half-truths. Where is the Liberal counter-attack? They seem to be missing in action. To quote Shakespeare, “ambition should be made of sterner stuff”.

It would now be opportune for Scott Morrison to remind voters that Bill Shorten said he would “run the country like a union”.

Bill Shorten’s chest beating about penalty rate restoration is another Labor beat up. The only reduction in the restaurant industry was a change from double time and a half to double time and a quarter on public holidays. This means it is still impossible for most businesses to open on a public holiday. All this achieves is less productivity, less employment and fewer services.

We have always been told that we should listen to what the alarmist scientists say about climate change. Evidently, that is not working so well. We are now told we must listen to the voices of schoolchildren who are apparently the new experts. That must be a bit galling for scientists.

William Webb Ellis and I shared the experience of attending Rugby School (Letters, 22/4). But he was a few years before me. I am troubled by the problems facing Rugby Australia. My best advice is to read the article by Alan Jones (20/4). He is no mug so far as rugby is concerned. His ideas may be right or wrong but he has people saying, that’s not a bad suggestion.

Marcus Titley, Taringa, Qld

Chris Mitchell is right about the need to consider the global benefits of Adani coal (“Time for Bob Brown’s environmentalists to tell the truth about Adani coal”, 22/4). It is annoying to hear Nationals candidates merely talking of local jobs rather than the broader issues. How can these issues be better publicised so that objectors can learn the consequences of their self-righteous views?

Peter Quinn, Esk, Qld

Having listened to interviews with Greens leaders recently, we must be very afraid if Labor relies on them to support a Shorten government.

Brad Norington’s article (“Call for foreign student clamp to ease burden”, 22/4) was enlightening. We should swell with pride knowing that Australia has such high principles. We welcome foreign students from developing countries that would be in need of young brain power, charge them a fortune while dangling the citizenship prize.

William Mapleston, Ashgrove, Qld
