I remind Rugby Australia that our game was created in 1823 by William Webb Ellis at an English Christian school called Rugby who spent the rest of his life quoting the Bible.
It’s amazing how politicians are praised for respecting our Christian traditions in not campaigning at Easter, but Israel Folau loses his job for upholding the same traditions. Perhaps we need rugby sponsors who believe and uphold our Western Judaeo-Christian values.
Stephen Morgan (Letters, 18/4) says Israel Folau’s quoting the Bible is such that “to continue his employment could compromise Rugby Australia and its sponsors”. A commercial position or contract of employment does not give the employer or its sponsors ownership of that employee’s soul.
I see the Opposition Leader is fed up with scare campaigns. Don’t mention Mediscare — let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
After trusting in Labor’s bipartisan support for my self-managed super arrangements, Bill Shorten has now decided I am a loophole. I’m inclined to say I’m a fruit loop for placing any trust in Labor in the first place.
I enjoyed Greg Sheridan’s column on the attributes of Tony Abbott and the coarse way he’s treated by the left-wing media (“Australia will be the poorer if Abbott is defeated”, 18/4). Why do they itch to put in the boot? He’s a genuine conservative, so what’s not to like?
Why not call it the Edna Everage Award (“Dame Edna alter ego loses ‘Barry’ award for sake of neutral gong”, 17/4)?
Dame Edna must be shuddering in her slingbacks now that the commissars of the Melbourne Comedy Festival have denounced Barry Humphries and stripped his name from their prize. These humourless clowns have devised a way to put satirists such as Humphries out of business — by being self-satirising.
What about the Helpmann awards, the Tony awards, the Nobel prizes and the Archibalds? None of these reflect on the gender of their winners. The Melbourne Comedy Festival organisers are being disingenuous.
Mike Cornell (Last Post, 18/4) is on to something. Renaming Victoria as Albert has a nice Aussie ring to it.
