Last Post. April 15

If Bill Shorten and Chris Bowen win the day and institute their version of a fair go it will result in everyone in this land being equally bankrupt.

Rod Searle, Madeley, WA

If ever there was a time for Bill Shorten to pursue the politics of the fair go it is now. He should be doing all in his power to have Julian Assange released.

Brian Sanaghan, West Preston, Vic

Whatever one’s opinion of Julian Assange, he has been a boon for the legal profession. Given past and prospective legal manoeuvres, Assange and his representatives serve up more than the a customary lawyers’ picnic but rather a feast with further courses in prospect.

John Kidd, Auchenflower, Qld

Greens leader Richard Di Natale is living in a fool’s paradise if he believes that Australia can sacrifice $66 billion a year in coal export earnings, all in the name of a fantasy that Australia has a significant role to play in the reduction of carbon emissions.

Helen Scheller, Benalla, Vic

It is one of the bulwarks of Christianity that redemption is in the way of confession. Israel Folau’s statement says no more than that. We were warned that freedom of speech was in peril and so it is.

Doug Wormald, Armidale, NSW

According to Israel Folau, I’m scheduled to burn in hell for being an atheist. However, I’m not offended and I fully support his right to voice his opinions. If we lose the right to free speech, then we are on the road to a genuine political hell.

David Armstrong, Maylands, WA

A generation ago Israel Folau’s post would have barely raised an eyebrow. What’s changed? Most definitely not God’s word.

Hans Gugger, Greenbank, Qld

It’s possible to keep playing rugby league and be involved in all kinds of loutish behaviour, but Rugby Australia would bar anyone who believes in the afterlife and of accountability to a higher authority.

David Cook, Drummoyne. NSW

l am always surprised when fellow non-believers get offended by someone of faith talking about hell. If you are an atheist, hell doesn’t exist, so why worry about someone implying he does.

Murray Horne, Cressy, Vic

Edwin Grimshaw (Last Post, 13/4) must have gone to school a long time ago to think that because light is weightless it must be immune to the force of gravity. As predicted by Albert Einstein, gravity bends space and time. And if the mass is large enough, gravity will bend space, time and light to collapse into a single point from which there’s no escape.

Henry Herzog, St Kilda East, Vic
