Budget sugar hits

So, Peter Dutton does love temporary sugar hits after all. For the LNP, which always proclaims to be the party of lower taxes, now confined to the dustbin of history!

Fraser Buchan, Port Elliot, SA

Will Jim Chalmers join Paul Keating and Wayne Swan as being named “world’s greatest treasurer”?

David Nankiville, Brighton East, Vic

Compare the pair: if Albanese wins, his $5 per week will buy you around three litres of fuel in 15 months. If Dutton wins, his fuel excise cut will “buy” you around 10 litres of fuel – in a few short months (“Cheap tank versus Jim’s cuppa”, 28/3).

Kim Keogh, Claremont, WA

Vote-buying works; naked bribes win more votes than they lose. Swinging voters are happy to put their own short-term best interests ahead of the wellbeing of the nation. Political parties know it, and so do we. If unjustifiable handouts lost more votes than they won, the practice would stop. The fault is ours, not our politicians.

David Roberts, Wembley, WA

The Treasurer obviously used a red permanent marker to ink in the budget deficits.

Michael Saul, Scarborough, Qld

Surely Peter Dutton’s cut of fuel tax will benefit businesses as well as households. Transport costs should come down and flow on to supermarkets, benefiting all.

Sheila Duke, Bulimba, Qld

Senator Hanson-Young’s antics in the Senate reminded me of last year’s Christmas lunch: half-baked Atlantic salmon followed by a fruit cake.

Paul Haege, Darling Point, NSW

Will the demonstrators and activists marching in Sydney’s CBD this Sunday be shouting the same words as the brave Gaza residents?

Riley Brown, Bondi, NSW

After what the Democrats did to Julian Assange, what should Donald Trump do to Jeffrey Goldberg?

Maris Dabars, Murray Bridge, SA

Now we see why Trump wants to save TikTok, to use for classified data. Goes straight to China, cuts out the middle man.

Trevor Farrant, Hackney, SA

Surely no one can dispute that as a result of the ascension of Donald Trump we are living in most interesting times.

George Fishman, Vaucluse, NSW

Is it true that ANU’s research into whether there are more than two sexes in China has been cancelled? If so, then Trump has a lot to answer for.

William Mapleston, Ashgrove, Qld
