Yassmin’s yucky Anzac post sparks outrage but Aunty does nothing about it
Yassmin Abdel-Magied marks Anzac Day in her own way. Abdel-Magied on Facebook, Tuesday:
Lest we forget (Manus, Nauru, Syria, Palestine).
Last Anzac Day, Yassmin had other things on her mind. Abdel-Magied’s Facebook page, April 25 last year:
It’s a place that sells sneakers … AND FRIED CHICKEN. Sydney you’ve outdone yourself.
Yassmin’s really doing the Anzac Centenary committee proud. The Anzac Centenary advisory board’s report to the federal government. March 1, 2013:
Youth Group — Giving young Australians a chance to have input into the development of the program to ensure the Centenary connects with our younger generation. Membership: Ms Yassmin Abdel-Magied
Maybe she’s lost touch with the Anzac Day spirit because she has been too busy selling glasses online. Abdel-Magied on Twitter, Tuesday:
Sooo stoked with my new set of frames 👓from @sneakingduck ! … To celebrate the launch of this new brand, I’ve got a sweet discount code for you! Use ‘YASQUEEN’ for 25% off …
Yassmin spent 2014’s Anzac Day wondering if Australian Muslims could really get involved in Anzac Day. Abdel-Magied’s blog, April 25, 2014:
Gallipoli, for example, is a huge part of the ANZAC legend. Yet that campaign was fought against the Ottoman Empire, and many of those troops were Muslims from Turkey. How does someone, born as a Muslim in Turkey but who grew up in Australia, reconcile that?
Most Turkish-Australians seem to be OK with Anzac Day but thanks for checking, Yassmin. SBS News online, yesterday:
… the president of the Auburn RSL Turkish chapter, Mehmet Evin … says he’s honoured to be laying a wreath at the dawn service in Martin Place on Tuesday.
The ABC host should have read herself before she posted that offensive comment.Abdel-Magied’s blog, April 25, 2014:
I see ANZAC Day as an opportunity to commemorate those who chose to give their lives up for a purpose larger than their own.
What is the ABC doing about its presenter, Yassmin? Nothing. An ABC spokesman’s statement to the media:
Her views and opinions are her own …
So Natasha Exelby nearly gets the sack for an on-air goof but Yassmin gets off scot-free for offending veterans? The Australian, April 12:
The ABC has confirmed newsreader Natasha Exelby will continue on air after outrage erupted at reports she had been axed. The ABC News 24 presenter was caught on air last week fiddling with a pen, and reacted with shock.
And last week Cut & Paste noticed The Australian Financial Review’s Phillip Coorey seems to have one solid source for his stories, The Australian’s Niki Savva. Well, he’s at it again. The AFR, yesterday:
Retirees who downsize by selling the family home are likely to be offered exemptions from new limits to be placed on superannuation …
Savva writes about the government’s superannuation plans in The Australian, April 13:
Bet on older people who downsize being allowed to put the proceeds into super above existing caps.
