Trump not such a turkey as dud climate predictions that said it would never snow again
Cold turkey. Newsweek, November 22:
Talk about cold turkey! The coldest Thanksgiving in 100 years, and quite possibly the coldest Thanksgiving ever, has hit the northeast United States today.
Global warming? Donald Trump tweets, November 22:
Brutal and Extended Cold Blast could shatter ALL RECORDS — Whatever happened to Global Warming?
Trump a turkey. Nick Visser, Huffington Post, November 22:
Climate scientists lambasted the president’s message Wednesday, saying there was “nothing unusual” about it being cold in November. “This demonstrates once again that Donald Trump is not an individual to be taken seriously on any topic, let alone matters as serious as climate change,” Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University (said.) “He is a clown — a dangerous clown. (NASA notes that weather is a short-term event … while climate is a measurement of weather over time.)
Prediction a turkey? Charles Onians, The Independent, March 20, 2000:
Snow is starting to disappear from our lives. Sledges, snowmen, snowballs … are all a rapidly diminishing part of Britain’s culture, as warmer winters — which scientists are attributing to global climate change — produce not only fewer white Christmases, but fewer white Januaries and Februaries. … According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”. “Children just aren’t going to know what snow is,” he said.
Confusing climate and weather? Porter Fox, The New York Times, February 7, 2014:
The planet is getting hotter. Snow melts above (32F). The Alps are warming two to three times faster than the worldwide average … Much of these environmental data come from a 2012 report … The National Ski Area Association has reacted with relatively ineffective campaigns … it is too late for all of that … This is no longer a scientific debate. It is scientific fact … I remember watching my first Winter Olympics in 1980 … You don’t have to be a skier to feel nostalgia for those whitewashed days — or to see the writing on the wall.
Cool it. Aaron Brown, Real Clear Markets.com, April 24:
Would it surprise you to learn the greatest global two-year cooling event of the last century just occurred? From February 2016 to February 2018 … global average temperatures dropped 0.56C … statistical cooling outliers garner no media attention. The global average temperature numbers come out monthly. If they show a new hottest year on record, that’s a big story … When they show cooling of any sort — and there have been more cooling months than warming months since anthropogenic warming began — there’s no story.
Chill out. Jasper Hamill, Metro.co.uk, November 16:
A NASA scientist has said a current slowdown in sunspot activity could cause temperatures in the upper layer of our atmosphere to plummet. Other researchers have previously warned that the lack of sunspots could herald the arrival of a uniquely grim “mini Ice Age” … “We see a cooling trend,” Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center told Space Weather.
They’ll never vote Liberal. Michael Owen, The Australian, November 20:
A public school teacher vowed to “ensure that the next generation of voters in my classroom don’t vote Liberal” in a social media post she thought would never become public.
Seems to be working. Melbourne Radio 3AW, November 22:
Schoolchildren have protested Australia’s inaction on climate change. The movement, sparked by a petition on Change.org, saw students take a day off school to protest outside Bill Shorten’s office in Moonee Ponds. One student … Callum, 11, said his teachers were supportive of him missing a day of school for it.
