Some used to wonder why The Oz kept on about Clive Palmer
We were paying very careful attention to the member for Fairfax before it was popular.
Back in the day. Radio National on June 10, 2014:
James Carleton: Page 1 in The Australian is where you see every single day a story — a negative story — about Clive Palmer. And obviously, by definition, some of those stories just have to be beat-ups — just no one can have that much bad news. But today The Australian’s Hedley Thomas has a piece that raises eyebrows, to say the least.
Paul Bongiorno: Yes, the editor (-in-chief) of The Australian, Chris Mitchell, believes that he’s doing a national duty by showing the nation the real Clive Palmer. And today’s front page is a real zinger in the sense that it does make you stop and say, ‘Ooh, what’s going on here?’ It purports to be a document written by Mr Palmer to the Queensland Newman government, to Jeff Seeney — senior minister, Deputy Premier — saying that if you give me favourable treatment I’ll back off causing problems for you. Minister Seeney says this amounts to corruption ...
The Palmer United Party tweeting a friendlier plug that same day:
More considered article on Clive Palmer in The Monthly than you’ll see in one of Rupert Murdoch’s rags …
From that Palmer profile in The Monthly:
He flouts the rules of conventional behaviour and gets away with it.
Soldiering on. The Australian’s front page yesterday:
Clive Palmer’s teetering business empire is under increasing pressure as administrators investigate clawing back at least $60 million in donations and loans from the MP’s Queensland Nickel refinery to other Palmer-controlled companies.
Well, at least we’ve got some company now. The ABC news website yesterday:
The wife of federal MP Clive Palmer has replaced his nephew as director of his flagship mining company Mineralogy. Documents lodged with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission show Anna Palmer was appointed director and secretary of the company two weeks ago. She replaced Clive Mensink, who is the director of Mr Palmer’s troubled Queensland Nickel.
Aunty on Wednesday:
As well as potentially paying out sacked workers’ entitlements, taxpayers could be forced to stump up tens of millions of dollars to clean up the site of Clive Palmer’s north Queensland refinery if the company cannot trade its way out of voluntary administration.
And Tuesday:
Clive Palmer’s Queensland Nickel has gone into voluntary administration, company directors have announced. On Friday, the self-proclaimed billionaire federal MP’s refinery sacked 237 workers ...
Sky News website yesterday:
Clive Palmer is under increasing pressure to quit federal parliament over the connections between his nickel business and political party. The mining magnate is under investigation for allegedly using Queensland Nickel as a cash cow for political donations and business loans.
The Australian Financial Review yesterday:
Queensland businessman Clive Palmer says voluntary administrators have no chance of getting back the $60 million in loans and donations moved from his Townsville nickel refinery to the Palmer United Party and his other business entities.
Clive Palmer on Twitter on November 30:
I sympathies (sic) for the poor News Ltd journalists who are forced to write damaging stories about me & @PalmerUtdParty #yesrupert
And on December 29:
Just too much hate in the world. Forgive your enemies.
