Put on your sparkly shoes, we’re DJing your gay wedding

You’ve heard from the winners. Australian actress and Yes campaign leader Magda Szubanski in Sydney yesterday:

I bloody love you, Australia.

You’ve heard from the losers. Former prime minister and No campaign leader Tony Abbott on Facebook yesterday:

I always said this was an issue where the Australian people wanted their say and today’s result demonstrates that seeking their views was the right thing to do. I congratulate the “yes” campaign on their achievement. The people have spoken and, of course, the parliament should respect the result.

You’ve heard from the Prime Minister who must act to make this law. Malcolm Turnbull in the Prime Minister’s Courtyard, Canberra, yesterday:

The Australian people have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly “yes” for marriage equality. They voted “yes” for fairness. They voted “yes” for commitment. They voted “yes” for love. Now it is up to us, here in the Parliament of Australia, to get on with it.

But there are big debates to come. Dennis Shanahan for The Australian online, yesterday:

Both Yes and No campaigners now have to realise that neither a winner-takes-all or a dog-in-the-manger attitude will be acceptable and that compromise on the legislation will be necessary …

Cut & Paste would like to suggest some songs for your wedding. John Paul Young, April 1978:

Love is in the air, in the whisper of the tree / Love is in the air, in the thunder of the sea / And I don’t know if I’m just dreaming / Don’t know if I feel safe / But it’s something that I must believe in / And it’s there when you call out my name

Songs for the older couples who have waited so long for this day. Etta James, November 15, 1960:

At last / My love has come along / My lonely days are over / And life is like a song, oh yeah / At last / the skies above are blue / My heart was wrapped up clover / The night I looked at you / I found a dream that I could speak to

Songs for the young gay people who just proposed to their other halves on the spot at yesterday’s rallies and parties. The Flamingos, 1959:

Maybe millions of people go by / But they all disappear from view / And I only have eyes for you

Songs for all the couples who are now planning lots and lots and lots of absolutely fabulous parties. The Beatles, July 7, 1967:

All you need is love / All you need is love / All you need is love, love / Love is all you need / All you need is love (All together now)

And songs for when your mum asks you when you’re getting married. Frank Sinatra, September 13, 1955:

Love and marriage / Love and marriage / They go together like a horse and carriage

We even have a tune for the pollies looking to delay the people’s decision. The Supremes, February 8, 1965:

Stop! In the name of love / Before you break my heart

Best of luck to all the lovebirds out there. All together now. My Fair Lady, March 15, 1956:

I’m getting married in the morning / Ding, dong, the bells are going to chime
