Labor’s sick note escape from tropical detention perfect for dog-whistling Persian cats

Sick note escape. Rosie Lewis, The Australian, January 15:

Scott Morrison has hit back at … (Labor after it) softened its asylum-seeker policy … by formally endorsing doctor-ordered medical evacuations off Manus … and Nauru.

Take a bow, Ms Kearney? SBS News, May 21 last year:

New Labor MP Ged Kearney has vowed to fight “racist dog-whistling” against refugees in Australia and to change her party’s asylum-seeker policies … (She) blasted as “shameful” the bipartisan commitment to stopping asylum-seekers on Nauru and Manus Island from entering Australia. “Racist dog-whistling has demonised and vilified a community that has everything to give to Australia, and the sacrifice of this human potential has been made solely for political gain” … (she) said in parliament.

Who’s the racist? Sohrab Ahmari, The Spectator, January 5:

For three years … Iranians have topped the … nationalities seeking asylum in the UK … (Iranians) I spoke to … debated where to settle … like a family weighing up … vacation destinations. Finland was “too cold, and they don’t pay much welfare”, said one. Switzerland was too expensive … (Australia) was out of the question: they had heard that Australian authorities divert illegals to PNG, and you could end up “having to share a hot cell with a (racist term for a local)” … Iranians can’t claim to be fleeing war … (so) they either pretend to be Afghan … (or Christian converts. Some are sincere but some are) like the young man I met … who asked me if it would be better for his asylum case if he were a Christian, a homosexual “or maybe both”.

Charles Hymas, The Telegraph, January 11:

More than half of failed asylum-seekers stay in the UK illegally … Of the 80,813 failed … rejected between 2010 and 2016 … up to 51,154 remained illegally in the UK.

Me too toxic. Mary Ward, The Sydney Morning Herald, January 15:

“Me Too” has been named Macquarie Dictionary’s word of the year for 2018 … Last year, “Milkshake Duck” (a term used to describe something initially loved by social media users which is tainted by some later revelation) took out the top spot. Other dictionaries’ chosen 2018 words of the year have included “toxic” (Oxford), as well as “single-use” … perhaps thanks to Coles and Woolworths phasing out single-use plastic bags …

Men too toxic? Alexandra Bruell, The Wall Street Journal, January 14:

One of the manliest brands in men’s products … (is) questioning “toxic masculinity”. Gillette, the … brand that for three decades has used the tagline “The Best a Man Can Get”, is building a new campaign around the #MeToo movement … The ad … titled “We Believe” opens with audio of news about the #MeToo movement, bullying and “toxic masculinity”. A narrator … (disputes) the notion that “boys will be boys”, asking “Is this the best a man can get? Is it?”

Bleeding customers. Sarah D., twitchy.com, January 14:

Dollar Shave Club is capitalising on Gillette’s woke stupidity … Gillette recently waded into virtue-signalling waters with their “The Best Men Can Be Campaign” … Because nothing attracts men to your product more than shaming masculinity. Needless to say, Gillette’s finding themselves bleeding customers, so to speak. And Dollar Shave Club is only too happy to make the most of it: If men don’t want to be shamed for being men, they’ll just go buy their manly stuff somewhere else.

They’d be crazy not to take advantage of Gillette’s stupidity.
