Good night, Goodsir! SMH boss out, nobody in at Fairfax
Readers shocked to learn anyone edited The SMH and Age in the first place.
The Sydney Morning Herald has lost its editor-in-chief. The Australian website, yesterday:
Fairfax Media today restructured the ranks of its senior editors after Sydney Morning Herald editor in chief Darren Goodsir resigned ... Mr Goodsir told staff this morning he was resigning after three-and-a-half years as editor-in-chief and nearly 20 years at the newspaper publisher.
Will Goodsir will ever pay Fairfax back the $200,000 they copped from his war against Joe Hockey? Daily Telegraph, July 1, 2015:
Fairfax Media has been ordered to pay $200,000 in damages to Treasurer Joe Hockey after a Federal Court ruled it defamed him on an advertising poster and in a series of tweets that declared he was “for sale” … The ruling took aim at SMH editor Darren Goodsir, the author of the headline, who Justice White said “had lost objectivity” and was “motivated by his animus towards Mr Hockey’’
Ambassador Hockey’s favourite song can be heard blazing in the streets of Washington today. News.com.au, May 14, 2014:
The Treasurer (then Mr Hockey) was forced to defend himself to press gallery stalwart Laurie Oakes last night after he questioned the Treasurer’s decision to dance to the tune “Best Day of My Life”.
Don’t text and edit, guys. Daily Telegraph, continued:
The court heard text and email exchanges between Mr Goodsir, Mr Holden and Mr Nicholls ...
“In that story you can run Hockey’s claim he knew nothing though as members of the forum entitled to meet him he must have seen membership list. Beyond that, f ... him,” he (Goodsir) texted.
After having his schedule cleared so he could dig up “dirt” on the North Sydney Forum, Mr (Sean) Nicholls updated Mr Goodsir on how the story was progressing on March 27, with Mr Goodsir replying: “f ... king brilliant’’.
“Please keep this as tight as a drum for now. I want to have this nailed to the cross in more ways than one.’’
So who will be the new editor-in-chief of the SMH? Oh ... nobody ... nobody at all ... The Australian website, yesterday:
The restructure abolishes the post of editor in chief at the SMH and The Age ...
The Agehas been without a captain for some time. The Australian, December 5, 2016:
The Age’s editor-in-chief Mark Forbes has resigned following allegations of sexual harassment and admitted he has failed to uphold required standards of behaviour.
But never fear, they’ll still be printing the two Fairfax dailies. For now... The Australian, yesterday:
The thinking is this: there’s still revenue coming into print from advertising and subscriptions, plus digital revenue is very soft. ... So the status quo holds. Until Fairfax changes its mind again
Then again, did the now-derfunct editor-in-chief of The Age ever do much editing?. ABC News online, October 3, 2016:
The Age newspaper has been forced to apologise over a “stuff-up” after it ran a half-page advertisement commiserating AFL premiers, the Western Bulldogs, over their apparent grand final loss.
Two versions of the post-grand final ad were prepared ahead of time for the Victoria University, which is a major sponsor of the Bulldogs.
The Age ran the wrong one — mistakenly describing the grand final as a disappointing loss.
