Don Jr emails himself in the foot as Russia messages threaten presidency

US President Donald Trump warns reporters about emails in Florida, December 31 last year:

If you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier ... no computer is safe.

But the President’s eldest son loves a good email. The Wall Street Journal, yesterday:

The President’s eldest son and senior campaign aides attended a meeting last year to discuss allegedly incriminating information about Hillary Clinton they were told was being offered by the Russian government in support of Donald Trump’s candidacy, according to emails Donald Trump Jr released Tuesday.

Junior was last in the news for defending his sister sitting in for Daddy at the G20. Trump Jr on Twitter, July 9:

If the left is so “outraged” about Ivanka sitting in for a few minutes, maybe they’d be happier if I sub in for a while???

Junior, we’re all relieved you didn’t sit in. Ivanka’s not a total muppet. The Wall Street Journal, yesterday:

The release of the emails, following days of news reports about the June 2016 meeting, offers evidence that senior officials in the Trump camp entertained offers of Russia’s help in last year’s election ...

Did these people learn nothing from Hillary? Never send emails. The New York Post, March 10, 2015:

Hillary Clinton revealed Tuesday that she deleted more than 30,000 “personal” emails from her tenure as secretary of state ...

Junior explained everything to The New York Times on Saturday:

We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago ...

Junior’s memory then came back. Trump Jr’s rejigged statement to TheNew York Times, Sunday:

The woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were ... supporting Ms Clinton.

On Monday night, when his lawyer was far, far away, Junior released his emails on Twitter:

Here’s my statement and the full email chain.

The meeting was not about adoption ... British publicist Rob Goldstone’s email to Trump Jr offering a meeting with the Kremlin-linked lawyer, June 3 last year:

The Crown Prosecutor of Russia ... offered to provide the Trump Campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary … This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump.

The mind boggles. The New York Post’s editorial, yesterday:

Don Jr is why Nigerian e-mail scammers keep trying their luck.

Junior admits the meeting was not a good idea. Fox News, yesterday:

In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently …

What part to do you regret, Junior? Actually replying to an email by a dodgy publicist? Or considering collusion with a foreign power? Trump Jr’s reply email, June 3 last year:

... if it’s what you say I love it ...

Junior on Fox News, yesterday:

Someone sent me an email. I can’t help what someone sends me.

The New York Post’s editorial, yesterday:

Donald Trump Jr. is an idiot.
