Climate guru’s fancies and decline of an inconvenient member

Hot and bothered in climate of suspicion. Hugh Tomlinson, The Times, September 17:

Rajendra Pachauri, the 78-year-old former head of the UN climate change panel (which won a Nobel prize) will stand trial next month charged with sexual harassment … He denies any wrongdoing. … (A colleague alleges) Dr Pachauri bombarded her with “carnal and perverted” messages … (and) touched her “in an inappropriate manner” … Dr Pachauri … claimed the text messages and emails … were tampered with by “unknown cybercriminals”.

Life imitates art? Robert Mendick, The Telegraph, January 30, 2010:

Dr Rajendra … Pachauri’s first novel is frankly smutty … Sanjay Nath, an academic in his 60s reminiscing on his “spiritual journey” … (enjoys) a lot of sex — with a lot of women. In … prose that risks making … (him) a laughing stock … he details sexual encounter after sexual encounter … of a climate expert with a lament for the denuded mountain slopes of … northern India … But talk of “denuding” is a clue of what is to come. By page 16, Sanjay is ready for his first liaison … More follows, including Sanjay and friends queuing to have sexual encounters with … an impoverished but willing local: “Sanjay … was overcome by a lust that he had never known before … caressing (Sajni’s) voluptuous breasts.” Sadly, for Sanjay … “the excitement got the better of him, before he could even get started”.

Is that a premature tipping point? Mark Steyn, National Review, January 31, 2010:

Oh, dear. There are times when even a climate expert can’t “hide the decline”.

No more Nobels? Robert Mendick, The Telegraph, January 30, 2010:

In the US, Sanjay can once more barely contain his ardour … breasts — usually heaving or else voluptuous — are thrust to the fore. … (A friend) is taken to a motel … only after he has fondled her breasts — “which he just could not let go of” — inadvertently sounding the car horn … Other passages … involve group sex and more risque … practices … Dr Pachauri … (wrote) the book while flying around the world … as IPCC chairman … But with calls for him to resign over academic blunders in the (IPCC reports, perhaps) he should have devoted more time to scrutinising the science … Some will also wonder whether … Dr Pachauri is reflected in Sanjay … Both men are in their 60s, grew up in Nainital and obtained doctorates in the US … The novel is unlikely to win awards other than the Bad Sex in Fiction prize … (but is) more enjoyable than … (Pachauri’s) 1976 tome Dynamics of Electrical Energy Supply and Demand: An Economic Analysis.

She probably does have some suggestions on what to do with the book. Times of India, February 12, 2016:

RK Pachauri’s novel … is back in the news after … a second woman … alleged being sexually harassed by … Pachauri. (She said he) gave her … the manuscript and asked for suggestions … “I came across graphic descriptions of sex … reminding me of the anguish I experienced at … (the climate institute).”

Another novel, another uncontrollable member. PJ O’Rourke, The Sydney Morning Herald, February 13, 2015:

Clive (James) starts … Unreliable Memoirs by saying, “Most first novels are disguised autobiographies. This autobiography is a disguised novel” … (He reveals:) “Similarly uncontrollable was my virile organ, which chose the most inconvenient moments to expand. For some reason riding on the top deck of the trolley bus led to a spontaneous show of strength.”
