Advance Australia to a place where ex-PMs don’t re-Joyce at losing government

Newspoll. Simon Benson, The Australian, September 10:

Scott Morrison has emerged as … a more popular leader than Malcolm Turnbull … but … the Coalition … faces an election wipeout …

Satire. The Shovel, August 24:

Announcing plans for a leadership spill today, Deputy Prime Minister Josh Frydenberg said … it was time for a fresh approach. “Scott Morrison has served this country admirably and with dignity. But if you look at the polls, if you listen to what people are saying on the streets, clearly, we need to act,” Mr Frydenberg said. One Frydenberg backer said … “Morrison had a good crack; but he’s had the entire weekend and clearly, he hasn’t turned things around. We can’t let this linger on and on” … “What the Liberal Party needs, what Australia needs right now is stability. And that’s what I can offer,” Frydenberg said.

Truth stranger than fiction. The Australian, September 13:

Barnaby Joyce (said:) I am disappointed that the person who was prime minister … would first of all say ‘well I’m out so I’m going to resign so you might lose the seat of Wentworth … the government which he relied on for a one-seat majority. And then the next iteration of that is really an active campaign to see if we can lose … the seat of Dickson. It seems like he has an active campaign to try and remove us as the government. I didn’t know why the Liberal Party changed leaders … but to be quite frank I’m starting to get an inkling now.

Advance Australia wrong. Talissa Siganto, abc.net.au, September 12:

Primary school student Harper Nielsen … (is refusing to stand for the national anthem because the song) is “wrong” … “When it says, ‘we are young’ it completely disregards the indigenous Australians who were here … for over 50,000 years,” she said. “When it was originally written, Advance Australia Fair meant advance the white people of Australia.”

Don’t like it? Blame Labor. National Archives of Australia, Fact sheet 251:

Advance Australia Fair … composed by Peter Dodds McCormick in 1878 — was proclaimed Australia’s national anthem on 19 April 1984 (on the recommendation of Labor prime minister Bob Hawke) … Prime minister Gough Whitlam announced … on 8 April 1974 that Advance Australia Fair had been chosen by the people … as the new national anthem.

Australia young in 1878? State Library of South Australia:

Matthew Flinders was the first to circumnavigate the continent … (In) A voyage to Terra Australis, Flinders wrote: “Had I permitted myself any innovation upon the original term (Terra Australis), it would have been to convert it into Australia” … by the end of the 1820s “Australia” was commonly used as the continent’s name.

Advance only white Australia? Australian Electoral Commission:

All adult (21 years) male British subjects were entitled to vote in South Australia from 1856, in Victoria from 1857, New South Wales from 1858, and Tasmania from 1896 including indigenous people … (In 1895) all adult women in South Australia, including indigenous women, won the right to vote … the Commonwealth Franchise Act of 1902 … (granted) the vote to both men and women … (including) “any Aboriginal native” … already enrolled in a state.

What would Peter McCormick say? Australian Dictionary of Biography:

McCormick … schoolteacher and songwriter … was remembered … as “a white-haired man with a red face … (who) remained imperturbable amid the tumult of the class-room, and was extraordinarily laconic”.
