Move over TikTok — is Triller the new social media trend for dance loving teens?
The Canberra Times, Sunday:
US President Donald Trump says he supports a deal that will allow TikTok to continue to operate in the United States after threatening to ban the Chinese-owned app in August. He told reporters at the White House he backs the deal with TikTok owner ByteDance, Oracle and Walmart to create a new company that will assume TikTok’s US operations called TikTok Global.
Trump, Sunday:
I think it’s going to be a fantastic deal. I have given the deal my blessing. If they get it done that’s great, if they don’t that’s okay too. The security will be 100%. Conceptually it’s a great deal for America.
TikTok’s spokesman, Sunday:
We are pleased that the proposal by TikTok, Oracle, and Walmart will resolve the security concerns of the US Administration and settle questions around TikTok’s future in the US.
But is it too little, too late for teens? Mashable, Saturday:
TikTok may be the app-du-jour, but its presence in the United States may not last. Enter Triller, the video sharing platform emerging as the alternative to TikTok amid uncertainty over the app’s future.
SBS, Saturday:
For people who make a living off of their presence on the social network – such as star Addison Rae, who boasts 60.9 million followers and earned $5 million between June 2019 and June 2020, according to Forbes magazine – the financial stakes are high. Even TikTok’s gold standard, Charli D’Amelio – who, with 87.5 million followers at just 16 years old, is the platform’s most popular creator – announced Tuesday a non-exclusive partnership with Triller, a similar platform, where she already has 1.1 million subscribers.
The New Daily, August
Triller is a similar app to TikTok and allows users to record dances and other content over music.
And Trump is on it. SBS, Saturday:
In a sign of the times, Trump himself, who never dipped his toe into TikTok’s waters, has made his debut on Triller, where he already has 953,000 followers.
In his first Triller video, Trump said:
I’m a professional at technology. Nobody can do it like me. Nobody.
Eldest son Donald Trump Jr is also on the app, and claimed in a video:
When you have an app like TikTok where the Chinese government could be turning on your kid’s camera, turning on your kid’s video, listening in, turning on their mic at any random time not just when they’re using the app. This goes so much further. Having access to all your photos and contacts and emails and the spyware that’s there. I mean this is something that could haunt your kids forever.
SBS, Saturday:
In August, Triller announced it had been downloaded 250 million times since it was created, a figure that was disputed by analytics firm Apptopia, which put the number of downloads closer to 52 million.
Mashable, Saturday:
Musicians like Chance the Rapper and Lil Uzi Vert used Triller to promote new music before TikTok’s meteoric rise to popularity in 2018. Triller’s user base boomed this summer after India banned TikTok following ongoing border disputes with China … Last month, Triller overtook TikTok in the App Store, ranking first in Top Free Apps. TikTok came in third.
