Australian shares gained 0.7 per cent on Monday as gaming group Crown jumped more than 20 per cent thanks to a takeover offer.

The Insurance Council of Australia has declared a catastrophe for large parts of NSW following the weekend’s devastating storms and floods. Freedom Foods dropped by as much as 90% on its return from suspension from trading on the ASX.
