Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Friday, August 27. Australia's sharemarket recovered from an intraday dip to close little changed before Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the virtual Jackson Hole central bankers' meeting.

On Wall Street, the Dow closed down 0.5 per cent, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both lost 0.6 per cent. Locally, retail sales figures are released and earnings season draws to a close, with Wesfarmers to deliver a $2.3bn capital return to shareholders.
