Welcome to the Trading Day blog for Wednesday, July 9. The ASX 200 index dropped 0.6 per cent to 8538.6 points on Wednesday, with hefty falls across property and miners, plus consumer-exposed stocks. On the flip side, utilities and energy stocks found support.
Wall Street flat lined on ongoing wrangling over US trade deals ahead of US President Donald Trump's new August 1 deadline. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed 0.1 per cent lower, while the Dow Jones index shed 0.4 per cent.
Among commodities, copper was the major overnight highlight. Futures contracts for copper — key for electrical wiring, motors and more — jumped 13 per cent to $US5.68 per pound in the largest single-day price surge in records going back to 1968.
Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin is just under $US108,800.
The Aussie dollar is trading around US65.25c.
