That's all from the Trading Day blog for Tuesday, October 21. The ASX 200 index closed up 0.7 per cent at 9094.7 after hitting a record high of 9115.2 after US gains, a critical minerals dealt with the US, and strong quarterly reports.

Optimism over US-China relations and the possible end of the US government shutdown this week saw the tech-heavy Nasdaq index lift 1.4 per cent, the S&P 500 index rose 1 per cent and the Dow Jones index also gained 1 per cent.

Cryptocurrency giant bitcoin is near $US109,600.

The Aussie dollar is trading near US65.07c.
