Nick Reiner, the son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been arrested and booked in a Los Angeles County jail, according to online jail records.

Mr Reiner was arrested Sunday night and booked Monday morning, local time, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department inmate locator. The Los Angeles Police Department and LA County Sheriffs declined to comment. Bail was set at $US4 million ($6m), online records said.

Mr Reiner, 32 years old, was being charged with a felony, according to the records. The records didn’t specify the allegations.

The elder Mr Reiner and his wife were found dead in Los Angeles on Sunday, in what police said was being investigated as a homicide.

Authorities responded to a call on the 200 block of Chadbourne Ave in Brentwood on Sunday afternoon and found two bodies, according to Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton. An LA Fire Department spokeswoman said the department found a dead man, approximately 78 years old, and a dead woman who was about 68.

A spokesperson for the Reiner family confirmed the deaths and said in a statement that they are “heartbroken by this sudden loss.”

Mr Reiner, a household name in the 1970s for his role as the outspoken liberal son-in-law on All in the Family, became one of Hollywood’s most accomplished film directors of the 1980s and 1990s, with credits including This is Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride, Misery and A Few Good Men. He slowed down his filmmaking work in recent years, but directed a sequel to Spinal Tap, which was released in September.

Mr Reiner was an outspoken advocate for liberal causes and donor to Democratic Party candidates. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom issued statements mourning the Reiners.

Ms Bass called their deaths a “devastating loss for our city and our country” and said Reiner’s contributions “reverberate throughout American culture and society.”

Mr Newsom said Mr Reiner and his wife had fought for LGTBQ+ rights and early childhood development.
