CANON and Olympus have new cameras that are putting an emphasis back on the megapixel.

Canon is boasting the “world’s highest resolution” in a full-frame DSLR camera with the 50.6-megapixel 5DS and 5DS R. The company also introduced the consumer-grade T6i and T6s Digital Rebel DSLRs with a new 24.2-megapixel sensor.

Meanwhile, Olympus introduced the OMD E-M5 Mark II, a 16-megapixel compact mirrorless camera capable of shooting composite shots containing 40 million pixels.

Aside from the massive megapixel jump for the 5DS and 5DS R — the previously top-of-the-line 5D Mark III has a 22.3-megapixel full-frame sensor — the new cameras have dual Digic 6 processors for speedier image rendering. The camera bodies themselves look to be essentially the same as their predecessors, and feature the same non-touch 3.2-inch LCD display. In a slight disappointment, video only tops out at 1080p on the new models — no 4K video.

The new Rebels not only improve upon the T5 model with redesigned sensors and the newer Digic 6 processor, but they are the first consumer DSLRs from Canon to have Wi-Fi and NFC wireless, for easier transfer of photos to other devices and the internet.

The Olympus OMD E-M5 Mark II boasts a 3-inch articulating touchscreen on the back, an electronic viewfinder and built-in Wi-Fi for sharing photos.
