Police are searching for a suspect after a shooting at the University of New Mexico campus Friday left one person dead and another injured.

The university in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was sheltering in place following the shooting in a student apartment building early Friday, the school said on social media. The shooter had a firearm and might still be on campus, the school said.

School officials haven’t named the shooter or the victims. The university said the surviving victim’s injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The university said that it has closed its central campus during the manhunt but that other areas of campus remain open. Some new students were scheduled to be on campus on Thursday and Friday for orientation, according to the school’s website.

The University of New Mexico said the shooting unfolded in the Casas del Rio apartment building on campus, which houses UNM and community college students. The outside company that runs the building, Texas-based American Campus Communities, didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

The university and the campus police didn’t immediately return requests for comment.

The University of New Mexico is a public school with about 23,000 students on its Albuquerque campus.
