Democrat Adam Schiff faces GOP payback for Trump campaign
The censure passes the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives by 213 to 209 along party lines.
The Republican-controlled US House of Representatives has voted to censure Democrat Adam Schiff, a longtime antagonist of Donald Trump. The vote was 213 to 209 along party lines, with six Republicans voting present.
Democrats yelled “Shame! Shame! Shame!” House speaker Kevin McCarthy was repeatedly interrupted as he read Mr Schiff the censure resolution. “I have all night,” Mr McCarthy said.
Republican Anna Paulina Luna, the sponsor of the resolution, alleged that Mr Schiff used his prior position as house intelligence committee chairman to spread falsehoods about Mr Trump regarding ties to Russia and encourage abusive intelligence investigations. She said that Mr Schiff “woke up every morning with one goal, to lie, lie, lie to the American people that there was direct evidence of Russia collusion”.
Mr Schiff, who led the first of the two impeachments of Mr Trump, has said that Republicans are targeting him because he had been so effective at holding the former president accountable. “You honour me with your enmity,” he said. “Your words tell me I have been effective in the defence of our democracy.”
