Canada retaliated on Wednesday against the Trump administration’s tariffs on steel and aluminium, saying it would impose a levy on an additional $20.6bn in U.S. imported goods.

Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc said that Canada was responding with a dollar-for-dollar approach with a 25 per cent tariff that would come into effect at 12:01am ET (3pm AEDT) on Thursday.

The tariffs will target US steel products worth $8.8bn, aluminium products worth $2bn and other US imports, including computers and sports equipment, LeBlanc said.

“Together we will do what we must do to protect Canada’s economy,” he said.

“The U.S. administration is once again inserting disruption and disorder into an incredibly successful trading partnership and raising the costs of everyday goods for Canadian and American households alike.”
