Calls from congress are growing for Joe Biden to grant temporary protected status to Ukrainians in the US, shielding them from deportation while their country is under attack.
Democrat senator Bob Menendez has urged the President to offer Ukrainians without a permanent immigration status – such as students, those on work visas and asylum-seekers – deportation protections and work permits.
“Ukraine is under assault in a brazen and unprovoked invasion by Russia that has the potential to create the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II,” said Democrats Alex Padilla and Zoe Lofgren.
The move could help roughly 34,000 Ukrainians in the US. About 4000 Ukrainians are fighting deportation cases in the US.
The UN refugee agency says more than 100,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries, while over 160,000 are estimated to be displaced within Ukraine.
