Withings has launched a revolutionary smartwatch that it says will detect sleep apnoea and collect a host of other health metrics.

“Developed by cardiologists and sleep experts, it is the world‘s first clinically validated hybrid smartwatch to detect both atrial fibrillation (AFib) and overnight breathing disturbances,” says the French consumer electronics company.

Withings says ScanWatch is its most medically advanced wearable to date with up to 30 days battery life with two hours needed to charge fully. It is designed to help users and their physicians monitor overall health.

It says the wearable identifies highly prevalent, yet largely underdiagnosed cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep breathing issues early.

Withings says ScanWatch measures heart rate, activity, electrocardiogram, sleep apnoea, sleep heart rate, oxygen saturation, and performs light, deep and REM sleep tracking.

It says heart rate and rhythm measurements are obtained by a PPG sensor using light absorbed by the blood and skin to measure variation in blood flow to the veins.

The ScanWatch has a smart wake-up feature to get you going in the morning. You can set a silent vibrating alarm or to wake at the optimal point in your sleep cycle.

There is also a workout mode with support for 30 activities including running, biking and walking. You can view a map of your path, plus distance, pace and elevation.

Many Withings watches look like ordinary analog watches but don’t be fooled – they are collecting data. You’ll need to head to the Withings app to view the metrics. It says the app is available for Apple devices with iOS12 or later, or Android phones with Android 6 or later.

The watch connects to your phone using Bluetooth low energy.

The watch comes in two sizes – 38mm and 42mm.

Withings has confirmed to The Australian that ScanWatch will be available here by the end of this year or early 2021. It says it is working with Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to seek approval before the local launch.

The Australian price is $479.
