Facebook’s popular mobile messaging service WhatsApp has announced a desktop app for Windows and Mac.

The app company, which was bought by Facebook in 2014 for almost $US19 billion, used a blog post to announce the free desktop app which syncs with the user’s mobile device.

It had previously offered a web version of its app, but is today offering a fully native product compatible with Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+.

“Today we’re introducing a desktop app so you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere — whether on your phone or computer at home or work,” the company said.

“Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.”

In February 2016 WhatsApp announced it had over one billion monthly active users, up from over 700 million in January 2015.

The cross-platform app uses the internet to send text messages, images, video, audio, location and more.
