TPG Telecom in hunt for STEM grads

The telco, led by Inaki Berroeta, says successful applicants will work alongside senior executives in a paid 18-month program, with access to free mobile plans.

Coal and gas price 'spikes' are costing Australian families and businesses

Amid the ongoing tech crunch and widespread job losses across the sector, TPG Telecom is launching its first ever STEM-focused graduate program, which will be open to university students in their final year of study.

Launching this week, the paid 18-month program will see participants working alongside experts and senior leaders from across TPG’s business with rotations in technology, security and engineering. Plus, across its other businesses, including Vodafone and iiNet.

The 14 successful applicants will work on technologies including 5G and artificial intelligence, according to Vanessa Hicks, TPG’s executive in charge of people experience.

The grads will also gain access to free mobile and NBN plans, $1000 towards a smartphone of their choice, and access to TPG’s Barangaroo offices, as well as extra leave and a paid day off to support a charity.

The program will run alongside existing STEM initiatives including the telco’s Girls in Tech Day with Inspiring the Future Australia, Dream Connection with Goanna Education and Vodafone Next with Coder Academy.

“Our 18-month program has been specifically designed to provide aspiring tech leaders an all-round experience of working at one of Australia’s biggest telecommunications companies,” Ms Hicks said.

“You’ll work with some of the smartest minds in telco, have access to mentors and coaches and be provided the tools, support and experience you’ll need for a great career in STEM.”

Ms Hicks said that with all the ongoing lay-offs in the local tech sector, particularly among start-ups, graduates could have confidence that TPG represents a stable, consistent employer. The company has about 6000 employees globally.

“At TPG Telecom we are focused on building a great culture that values diversity and creates inclusive experiences for all our people,” Ms Hicks said.

“So, if you’re enthusiastic, curious and love the fast-paced world of tech and telco, then TPG Telecom is the place for you.”

Applications are now open and close on March 15.

It comes after TPG and Telstra each appealed a decision by the competition and consumer watchdog to block a regional network sharing deal, with the Australian Competition Tribunal set to making a ruling in coming weeks. The companies have each called on the Tribunal to set aside the ACCC’s determination and grant ‘unconditional merger authorisation’.
