Optus takes cap off Netflix, Presto
Telco follows Telstra’s lead offering some mobile customers unlimited video and music streaming.
Optus is doubling down on its aggressive entertainment strategy, offering some postpaid customers unmetered TV, movie and music streaming.
Customers on the telco’s ‘My Plan Plus’ mobile plans paying $100 per month or more will get access to Netflix and Presto in standard definition without using any of their data cap, while customers on any other plan can add it for $10 per month.
They’ll need to bring their own Netflix and/or Presto subscription however.
New and existing Optus customers can also get unlimited mobile access to music streaming services including Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio and Google Play Music.
The telco’s head of mobile marketing Tim Cowan said sine customers were avoiding mobile streaming out of fear of using too much data.
“With Optus offering more entertainment options to customers than ever before, they will be able to enjoy the best in TV, movies and music, streamed data-free, wherever they may be using Optus mobile network,” Mr Cowan said in a statement.
“Netflix and Presto are just the start of our Mobile TV platform. We look forward to adding even more of the video content that our customers know and love over the coming months.
“We’re working closely with a range of Australian and global content providers to ensure we can give customers choice when it comes to data-free streaming.”
The news comes just a day after Optus’ rival Telstra revamped its home internet bundles to include free 3-month subscriptions to Netflix, Stan and Presto.
While Telstra holds the digital rights to the AFL and NRL Optus holds the rights to EPL, but has come under fire from angry subscribers who have complained of delays, poor picture quality and service disruptions.
Optus’ EPL coverage costs $15 per month for all plans except for those on the $85 or higher ‘My Plan Plus’ customers.
Vodafone offers subscriptions to Stan and music streaming service Spotify as part of some of its mobile plans.
