CES 2016: LG takes aim at high end with Signature series, 4K OLED TV

LG is taking aim at the high end with its new Signature series featuring a TV with a screen depth of just 2.57mm.

The greatest gadgets of CES unveiled

LG has taken to the CES 2016 stage to launch a new family of premium home electronics aimed squarely at the high end of the market.

The LG Signature range focuses on simplicity, eradicating unnecessary complication in both design and user interface and crossing a range of products including televisions, washing machines and refrigerators.

The star of the new range is the new 4K OLED G6 television, featuring a return to a flat screen, Dolby Vision HDR support and an impossibly thin screen depth of just 2.57mm, the depth of four stacked credit cards.

The Television’s design is a leap forward for the company, jettisoning the questionable useful curves of previous models for a traditional flat shape while simplifying the design to a single sheet of glass with an attractive copper toned metal base.

While HDR (high dynamic range) has been a TV buzzword since CES 2015, LG’s integration of Dolby Vision is a step toward a healthy supply of AAA content produced for the standard, with a number of 2015’s biggest films already mastered specifically, including Inside Out, The Martian and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Purchasers might still be starved for a wealth of 4K content, but LG has worked to make as many streaming services available as possible in its updated WebOS 3.0.

LG was also quick to point out the benefits of the advancements of their Organic LED technology, conceding a lower maximum brightness compared to LCD but touting “immeasurable” black levels unmatchable by LCD. From first impressions, the blacks held up to the claims, looking as dark as night and making colour pop.

The company’s other products launched included an air purifier, refrigerator and all-in-one washer and drier.

The Signature Refrigerator sports an elegant dual-door metal design, automatic opening sensors for the lazy or over encumbered, plus a see through door that will light up with a knock on the glass. LG promises pets won’t trigger the floor projected auto-opening sensor but mentioned nothing of locking out adventurous children.

The washing machine features the ability to wash two loads simultaneously thanks to the addition of a second smaller washing drawer, a reduction in operating noise and a design that wouldn’t feel out of place in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The company also used the event to mention a few new products, including an update to their 4K LCD range and support for Google’s Brillo and Weave Internet of Things protocols.
