Apple is set to build a global flagship store in the heart of Melbourne CBD, with the US technology giant to set up shop at Federation Square.
The move, made possible through a partnership with Federation Square and the Victorian state government, will see Apple build a brand new retail space at the site. According to Apple, the store, powered entirely by renewable energy, will deliver 200 new retail jobs and support several hundred construction jobs.
Apple’s senior vice president, Retail, Angela Ahrendts, said that the new facility will be Apple’s most significant store in the Southern Hemisphere. It will be Apple’s second flagship store outside the United States, and the fifth worldwide.
“Apple Federation Square respects the original vision for the plaza, with a bespoke design concept and extensive landscaping bringing increased opportunities for the community to enjoy this renowned cultural hub.”
“We’re thrilled to move forward in the planning process for our new home in Melbourne’s Federation Square and would be honoured to call the world-class galleries and museums of Melbourne our neighbours,” Ms Ahrendts said.
Victoria’s minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren said the new flagship store would be a major drawcard for visitors and locals.
The store will create nearly 500 square metres of new public space. Construction is set to begin early 2019 and the store will open in 2020.
“This will be the only new generation Apple store in Australia — bringing millions more visitors to Victoria and breathing new life into Federation Square,” Mr Eren said.
