Rise and Shine: Everything you need to know before the ASX opens
Good morning! Here’s everything you need to know, and some things you don’t, before the ASX flings open its doors and begins trading today.
Good morning, and welcome to Rise and Shine on Monday, May 5, 2025.
The Australian Federal Election is done and dusted, with Anthony Albanese's Labor Party coming from nowhere around three months ago to hand Peter Dutton's Coalition a pumping.
Labor was on track to hold 85 seats at last count, with even the Greens fumbling the ball on the other side of the political ledger, leader Adam Bandt down in Melbourne in danger of copying Dutton's historic feat of losing his own seat.
It comes hot on the heels of the Anti-Trump Liberals winning a previously unthinkable fourth straight election in Canada as Mark Carney saw off Conservative Pierre Poilievre.
There were clearly other problems, a lack of reforming policy stultified candidates on both sides. The Labor mandate is stronger, but what that means for investors and business, absent the (probably temporary) disappearance into the background of the nuclear debate, is less than clear.
What of President Trump? He created some AI generated nonsense of himself as the Pope over the weekend. Never a dull day.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 rallied strongly on Friday at the very least.
On this day in 1973 as many as 134,476 punters packed into Churchill Downs, divorcing themselves of over US$7 million and their loved ones as the legendary horse Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby, the first of his three legged Triple Crown.
The ninth horse to achieve the feat, his glittering career lasted just 16 months before an existential crisis led to a life as a recluse.
He spent years locked away, writing a classic novel across seven volumes totalling over 4000 pages interrogating the theme of involuntary memory. Or ... maybe that was Marcel Proust. Actually I think Secretariat just went out to stud. What a life.
Anyway, on to the market info you all came here for.

Between the cooling trade war and a big sell off in the Chinese gold market, the precious metal has been on the slip in recent days.
Saxo Bank’s head of commodity strategy Ole Hansen said the Chinese market closure takes a key buyer out of the market and could present more short term risks for gold prices.

Making news…
Dateline Resources (ASX:DTR) is gearing up to list on the US OTCQB to give American investors better access to its shares. Dateline already trades on the OTC Pink market under the code DTREF, but this upgrade will boost visibility while keeping its main listing on the ASX.
Its Colosseum project in California has just got a presidential nod after Trump highlighted Colosseum in his official Truth Social weekly update, stating:
“The Colosseum Mine, America’s second rare earths mine, has been approved after years of stalled permitting.”
The US government says the mine will help secure critical minerals and reduce reliance on China.
Colosseum has got 1.1 million ounces of gold, and rare earths now firmly in the exploration mix. A full feasibility study is underway, and with rising US interest, Dateline’s shaping up as a serious player in America’s critical minerals push, the company said.
Codrus Minerals (ASX:CDR) has just locked in a drilling permit for its high-grade Bull Run gold project in Oregon, with plans to punch in up to 14,000 metres across 10 sites.
It’s a historical gold patch, the old Record Mine pumped out gold back in the 1930s, and past drilling has pulled up hits like 20.5 metres at 3.53g/t, including a juicy 6.9 metres at 9.31g/t. Gold has also been named a critical mineral in a Trump executive order, good timing as Codrus gears up to drill and unlock what it reckons could be a major find.
