Woolworths is upping its discount campaign by extending its ‘lowest shelf price’ promotion to almost 700 popular food and grocery basket items.

Amid a cost-of-living crisis, political pressure on supermarket profits and a rejuvenated arch rival Coles which is dazzling shoppers with its own reduced prices, Woolworths is not done yet.

The supermarket giant has promised an average saving of 14 per cent across newly added items from rice and pasta sauce to muesli bars and olive oil.

Woolworths on Tuesday said customers have saved more than $50m since its ‘lower shelf price’ campaign was introduced in May.

Customers could save up to $110 per shop across the total basket of the new 100-plus products added, the retailer said.

Woolworths chief executive Amanda Bardwell said she understood the importance of providing consistent, reliable value to customers.

“This is not about temporary specials, but about long-term shelf price certainty on the products that matter most for families,” she said.

“Since launch we have seen the lower shelf prices resonate with our customers and we’re seeing families embrace the savings on key staples such as bread, yoghurt, cheese and baby wipes.

“Our customers are telling us that these dependable prices are helping them plan and manage their weekly shop with more confidence. Our commitment to providing value is ongoing, and we will continue to invest in lower shelf prices in the future.”

Some of the essentials selected for inclusion are Sacla pasta sauce, Woolworths jasmine rice, The Natural Confectionery Co. mixed lollies, Kellogg’s variety packs and Indomie Mi Goreng noodle cups.

An outbreak of price wars between Woolworths and Coles, as well as discounter Aldi, has charmed shoppers and households under increased budget pressures to feed their families.

Earlier this year, when Woolworths began slashing prices, Ms Bardwell said the supermarket giant had “listened to customers”, and Woolworths was acting “to do more” for grocery bills.

A month after Woolworths launched its new price campaign, diverting one quarter of its $400m in targeted business cost savings into lower shelf prices, Coles quickly followed with its winter promotion where 307 groceries were captured by its ‘Down Down’ discount offer for 12 weeks, yielding customers an average 19 per cent price saving.

Coles also introduced its first ever FlyBuys activated bonus campaign to give loyalty customers 10 times the number of points on more than 800 items during June.

Aldi has pushed through discounts too.

Woolworths and Coles will report their full-year accounts next week with investors eager to see if discounting has influenced market share.
