‘Watch the waves from window’: pro surfer lists Avoca Beach home
Aussie surfer and his family list renovated central coast home, where you can watch whales frollicking from the kitchen.
It’s the perfect home for a surfer: check the swell from your kitchen window and be out in the blue five minutes later.
Professional surfer Adrian ‘Ace’ Buchan grew up on the NSW central coast and learnt to surf at Avoca Beach. He joined the Avoca Boardriders club at the age of 10.
“Avoca has always been home, and I’ve always dreamt of owning a home here,” he says.
Fifteen years ago, that dream came true. Ace and his wife Beck had friends who lived on Warren Avenue, just one street back from the sand, and they jumped at the chance to buy No.28 when it came up for sale.
“It’s a quiet little street, it’s got ocean and lake views. You can walk to the beach, watch the surf, it’s magical looking out at The Skillion,” he says.
Their four-bedroom home is just 500m from the beach and has been the backdrop of lots of precious memories for Ace, Beck and their young family. It has been lovingly renovated and upgraded over their time here, with a “contemporary, beachy” aesthetic.
The main living area has vaulted ceilings, a slow combustion fire and floor-to-ceiling windows which look over the lake and the backyard. Buchan, a keen cook, nominates the light-filled kitchen as his favourite feature.
“As a surfer, you can watch the wind and waves from the window, see the whales migrating; it gets lovely northern light.”
Downstairs is what Buchan calls “my office”: a double garage that has had a custom makeover by Kyal and Kara from The Block to house Buchan’s impressive array of surfboards.
The home’s front courtyard has a custom South African braai barbecue and built-in seating.
Buchan, who dedicated 16 years to travelling on the Surfing World Tour, would spend eight months of the year overseas but says he always loved coming home to Warren Avenue.
“I’ve been extremely lucky to spend the past 15 years in one of the most magical spots in Avoca,” he says.
Now, transitioning off the tour and into corporate life, the family has moved to Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
Ace and Beck hope their former home will bring another family as much happiness as it brought them.
“We’re hoping it goes to someone who will love it as much as we have,” Ace says.
They have tasked The Agency Central Coast’s Kathleen Albury with finding a new owner. She is seeking $2.45m to $2.65m for the 816sq m property and is looking to market it both locally and internationally.
Albury, who started her career in South Florida in the US, says the strong buying power of the US dollar could tempt some Australian expats home.
Avoca Beach, 90 minutes’ drive from Sydney, is renowned as one of the best surfing beaches on the central coast. It is a tightly held locale, with notable sales in the past year including $4.2m in May for 5 Ascot Avenue and $4.975m for its neighbour, No.10, last November. Several sales, including the Buchans’ neighbours at 21 Warren Avenue, changed hands for more than $7m in 2021.
