A luxury home on the edge of the Brisbane River has sold for $8.4 million under the hammer, making it the city’s largest sale at auction in over a decade.

The home, at 95-99 McConnell St in the trendy inner-east suburb of Bulimba, sits on a double block with uninterrupted 32 metre of views to the Brisbane River and Hamilton Hill.

It sold on Wednesday night at auction after three bidders quickly became two, battling it out after a starting bid of $5.5 million. The rapid-fire bids worked their way up to $8.4 million over 15 minutes before the property sold to a young local family.

Marketing agent Sarah Hackett of Place Bulimba said both cash-ready local bidders had viewed the property several times prior to the auction.

“It is obviously above reserve, and a fair bit above reserve, but I expected it to be competitive. It was a two-horse race in the end and both said they had bid more than they wanted to,” Ms Hackett said.

“I can’t say to them ‘don’t worry, there is another [riverfront home] coming on the market around the corner’. This is the lowest amount of stock that’s ever been on the market on the riverfront.”

The five-bedroom home sits on a rare 1473sqm north-facing block. Grand interiors take advantage of the views, with large outdoor entertaining areas and light-filled archways in the living spaces.

The record for the largest sale in a decade was previously set in March. Property development mogul Kevin Seymore purchased 39 Griffith St, New Farm for $7.75 million in auction negotiations.
