Reefview House on Hicks Island in Far North Queensland has an asking price of $1.075m

A Great Barrier Reef island retreat just a few kilometres from a high-end $700-a-night resort, has hit the market for less than the price of an average home in some Brisbane suburbs.

An island retreat overlooking a pristine section of the Great Barrier Reef is on the market for less than the price of an average home in Australia’s two largest cities.

Reefview House on Hicks Island in Far North Queensland has an asking price of $1.075m and has views of the high-end Haggerstone Island Resort which is 6km away.

Three years ago pubs baron Justin Hemmes and Caledonia chairman Mark Nelson bought a stake in Haggerstone Island where huts rent from $700 a night and the whole island for $7000.

Private Islands Online’s Richard Vanhoff, who is marketing the 3642sq m property, said the state government recently renewed the 30-year lease on the 160ha island which is off Cape Grenville, 600km north of Cairns.

“We have experienced significant interest in this property,” he said.

“With this new lease, we can now assure potential buyers that the property offers a highly secure tenure.”

Mr Vanhoff said Reefview is positioned along the “awe-inspiring” Great Barrier Reef in northern Queensland, this home shares the island with only three other residences, each well-spaced without immediate neighbours.

The double-storey waterfront home has three bedrooms and the master bedroom is connected via a breezeway to the main residence complete with airconditioning and boasting a private veranda.

The home is well appointed with all the modern features, including flushing toilet with ample water supply and electricity. The property comes with two boats.

Hicks Island also has its own 800m runway and was once the location for a failed copra industry.

Mr Vanhoff said Reefview House was reluctantly offered for sale by the owners due to the change in personal circumstances.

“This much-loved property has been an integral part of the family life for many years now,” he said.

“The home boasts a beautiful tropical orchid garden, there is also an orchard on the island that is for use by all shareholders, here you can take your pick from bananas, mangoes, limes and lemons.”
