Rare home designed by the architects behind Brisbane’s award-winning Calile Hotel

When a home designed by the architects behind Brisbane’s Calile Hotel – recently named one of the world’s best – hits the market buyers sit up and take notice.

The new build at 8 Milne St, Clayfield is one of just two homes designed by the award-winning architecture team behind the Calile Hotel.

Brisbane’s award-winning Calile Hotel was recently named one of the world’s best hotels and now the chance to live as though you are on permanent holiday has come on to the market.

A home in the up-market suburb of Clayfield, on the city’s north side, is one of just two residential homes designed by architect team, Richards and Spence Architects, who designed the favourite getaway stay.

Using the firm’s signature style of masonry and stone, 8 Milne St creates a seamless connection between the interior and exterior of the property.

Place New Farm agent Heath Williams said the home is “atypical” compared to current design trends because of outdoor spaces.

“It is a courtyard house in the way that it all opens and folds,” Mr Williams said.

“It's one of the few houses that I’ve been in that actually looks better in the day.

The home has a kitchen worthy of any boutique hotel.

“Once you open that house up, you feel like that entire ground floor is very connected to the landscape.”

Last month, The Calile Hotel was named the 12th best hotel in the world by UK publisher William Reed, and was the only Australian destination on the list.

Located within Brisbane’s popular James St retail and restaurant precinct, the hotel was commended by a panel of 580 global industry experts for “channelling a luxe, 1950s-style Miami beachside vibe in the heart of the city”.

Since opening in 2018, the 175-room hotel quickly became a favourite with travellers and locals alike, and is particularly attractive due to the six restaurants that operate within its footprint.

Several other buildings within the leafy high street were also designed by Richards and Spence Architects.

While balancing luxury and functionality, Mr Williams said the hardy home would also be fit for a family.

Double height masonry walls complement the travertine stone floors and are juxtaposed against softer timber design elements.

The north-side pocket of Clayfield, Ascot and Hamilton has also undergone an “architectural revival” in recent years, Mr Williams said.

“Clayfield has certainly gone through a very large architectural revival in the last five to seven years,” he said. “The home fits in beautifully to the area and it's on a good size block.” Under Queensland laws no price guide is available as the home is going to auction on October 27.

The only other residential property designed by the firm is in the Brisbane River-hugging suburb of Dutton Park, with each stand-alone properly completed prior to the Calile Hotel.

Brisbane-based interior designer Tory Waller said there is an increasing commitment to biophilic design, which refers to the connectivity between buildings and the environment.

“Research is showing spending around 20 minutes a day near indoor plants is actually lifting people's mood, it’s really interesting,” Ms Waller said.

“If you’re looking at space design, there’s a huge push on making the outside and inside one and I think that’s something that works with a more kind of concrete brutalist architectural base.”

Meanwhile, the award for best hotel in the world was given to the Passalacqua Hotel, a boutique hotel on the shores of Lake Como in Italy.
