Inside Marc Newson’s cathedral sized London flat

Positioned just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace, acclaimed Australian designer Marc Newson and his wife, Charlotte Stockdale, have listed their cathedral-sized London apartment.

Fears of ‘domino effect’ amid Evergrande debt crisis

Acclaimed Australian designer Marc Newson and his wife Charlotte Stockdale, previously described as the right-hand woman to Karl Lagerfeld, have listed their cathedral sized London apartment.

Positioned just a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace and constructed in 1894, the Francis Street apartment was originally part of a sorting office for the Royal Mail before the building was purchased by Alessandro Crivelli, who had gained recognition for developing Milan’s iconic fashion district, Zona Tortona and the building in Tribeca New York that hosts the eponymous film festival, as well as New York Fashion Week.

Initially securing planning permission for 122 flats, in the end, a more sympathetic design of just 9 apartments were developed, as well as commercial space that would become the offices of Newson and Tom Ford.

Entered on the second of just three floors, the four bedroom, four-bathroom apartment has been home to the Newson family for 14 years. Large, light grey Alaskan river stones cover the entirety of one wall, giving the apartment an American chalet vibe, Newson told The Sunday Times.

Newson is renowned as an era-defining designer and engineer, famously working with the likes of Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Qantas, Nike and Mont Blanc.

Newson worked alongside Jonathan Ive co designing the Apple Watch, but is perhaps most famous for his Lockheed Lounge seat, for which Marc set the record for the highest price achieved at auction by a living designer.

Similarly, Stockdale is renowned as one of the most cutting edge fashion stylists on the planet. She has been an editor at Vogue and I.D, working with such fashion royalty as Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger, Fendi and Jo Malone.

The apartment, which features New York loft-style windows draped in chocolate brown linen curtains, has been their home for the past 14 years.

The family, who spend their weekends in Gloucestershire, are downsizing to a smaller London apartment. All the furnishings, fixtures and fittings except the sofas were designed by Newson.

Engel & Volker are handling the marketing campaign. The property, built in 2009, has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and one parking bay. The Newson’s are not publicly disclosing the price they seek.
