Felicity and Fergus Davidson have seamlessly retained the charm of their historic property in Sydney’s Upper North Shore, while transforming it into an ultimate family home.
Fergus says his wife has an eye for blending the old with the new, as evident in the impressive Pymble trophy house Terara.
The immaculate Federation-style house that was built in 1901 has been home to the couple, their children, Julia, seven, Hamish, 10, plus their two much-loved dogs, Louis, a poodle and Ginny, a labradoodle.
They purchased the house via private sale a decade ago and did a quick repaint of tired “apricot sponged” rooms when they first moved in, followed by the extensive renovations in 2018.
“We had walls knocked down and a new kitchen, bathroom and laundry, new flooring and lots of electrical work – so everything has been renewed,” says Felicity.
They also replaced the roof last year.
“We chose reclaimed Welsh slate, identical to the original and added a small section of slate to the terrace and used reclaimed timbers to ensure that it didn’t look new,” says Fergus.
“Upstairs, we enhanced the old stained glass window by switching some of the opaque panels for clear, to bring in more light and get distant views, while retaining the original coloured glass panels.”
Felicity says as soon as she saw Terara she knew it had lots of potential and would be perfect for the family.
“We have loved living here – there’s just something about older style houses that have great appeal,” she says.
“The house flows well and it is perfect for entertaining.”
The property is walled and securely gated from the street and is spread over two levels with elegant formal areas that lead to expansive open-plan family living.
Soaring ceilings feature throughout the full brick four-bedroom home which includes a large office which could be a fifth bedroom.
Timber floors, vintage Murano turn of the century lighting and formal dining and living rooms plus a wine cellar add to the appeal.
Four generous upper-level bedrooms include a master wing with a green leafy outlook, a walk-in robe, ensuite and access to the large upper-level terrace.
Fergus says the new kitchen was designed in sympathy with an old house, so it is less likely to date. It features an attractive marble island bench and two oversized ovens and cooktop and opens to a large family living area with a gas fireplace.
A covered alfresco terrace with a retractable awning is a great spot for entertaining and there’s an attractive pool and terrace area.
Outdoor lighting enhances the landscaped European garden with manicured lawns, an “old and artistic looking” mature Crepe Myrtle and more than 100 established camellias.
Terara is a short walk to the bus and train station, local shops and private and public schools.
“It’s an excellent neighbourhood and great community,” says Felicity.
The 29 Grandview St, Pymble property is for sale by private treaty with a price guide of $6.9m to $7.3m through Ray White Upper North Shore agents Rowan Lazar and Graeme Schultz.
