Brian Henderson’s Middle Cove home to get top ratings in Sydney
The family of newsreader Brian Henderson is selling his long-time home on Sydney’s north shore with expectations that it will go for over $10m.
The family of legendary Channel 9 news host Brian Henderson has put the Middle Cove home he lived in for more than three decades on the block.
The residence, which sports stunning water views, is likely to set records in the area which has already seen a dramatic rise in prices as the housing market booms.
Mr Henderson, who first appeared Australia’s TV screens in 1957 before a record-breaking run as a nightly newsreader, died three months ago at the age of 89 after a long battle with cancer.
The home, listed by his widow Mardi, will sell in the double digit million range, said sales agent, Ken Jacobs of Christies International.
The agent called the property, which last traded in 1994, before it was overhauled with the aid of architect Mike Macauley, a “hidden gem” which combined an elegant and thoughtful design merge with a natural serene setting.
The home is on a spectacular 1,800sq m block of reserve-side land with views that sweep over the valley to Fig Tree Cove.
Mr Henderson was best known as the calm, reassuring figure who delivered Sydney’s most-watched 6pm news bulletin for decades.
His media career ended upon his retirement in 2002, though he remained a newsman to the end, offering his thoughts and advice on Channel 9’s coverage.
Henderson twice won the Gold Logie – the highest honour in Australian television. He first won the award in 1968 as the nation’s most popular television personality, and received a second, honorary Gold Logie in 2013 when he was inducted into the Logies hall of fame.
He still holds the Australian record for the longest-serving television news presenter, having read either the Sydney weeknight or weekend news on Channel 9 from January 1957 until November 2002.
