Internet demand is skyrocketing as Australians increasingly self-isolate and stay at home, a new snapshot of NBN Co data reveals.
The NBN Co’s first Australian broadband data demand report shows big increases in download peaks since the end of February, with video conferencing, video streaming and cloud-based office applications driving demand. The network last week hit an all-time record of 13.8 terabytes per second, which is about five times the peak seen in New Zealand.
Internet traffic from online conferencing software Zoom is estimated to be up by more than 1000 per cent.
The report found NBN traffic during business hours has soared by more than 70 per cent, but demand was still highest during the evening.
Last month NBN Co said it would give internet service providers 40 per cent extra capacity for free.
“As we continue to see these increases in data demand, the network continues to perform well,” NBN Co chief customer officer Brad Whitcomb said.
