Saracen Mineral Holdings suspends Carosue Dam mine after accident
Saracen Mineral Holdings has suspended work at one of its major WA gold mines after a serious mining incident.
Saracen Mineral Holdings has suspended work at one of its major WA gold mines after a “serious” safety incident involving one of its workers.
The WA gold miner called a halt to trading in its shares on Monday, saying it had suspended all operations at Carosue Dam hub – worth 35 per cent of its June quarter production, or 50,315oz – after a “a serious incident involving an underground worker at its Dervish mine in WA”.
The underground mine is part of Saracen’s Carosue Dam hub and, while Saracen did not give details of the incident, it said it appeared the underground worker had fallen from a height.
“A full investigation into the incident has been launched. The WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety has been advised of the incident and is sending representatives to site,” the company said.
“Operations at the company’s Carosue Dam Operations, which include the Dervish underground mine, have been suspended.”
Saracen said it would update the market further as details of the incident became clear.
Saracen is still to release its full June quarter production result, but said last week it had produced 520,414oz of gold last financial year, of which 203,281oz came from Carosue Dam.
Its shares were up 3c to $6.15 on Monday, before the trading halt was called.
