Margin Call: Anthony Pratt taps C-bombing former Abbott staffer as Trump envoy
You’ll never believe who billionaire Anthony Pratt has just enlisted to be his liaison to the Trump administration.
Margin Call can reveal Pratt — whose $13.14 billion recycled packing fortune puts him on top of Australia’s Richest 250 — has just signed up Richard Dowdy as his New York-based vice president of government relations at Pratt Industries.
Hasn’t Dowdy fallen on his feet?
Dowdy, a long time staffer to Tony Abbott, briefly shot to prominence for hurling the “C-bomb” at Malcolm Turnbull after his successful Liberal leadership coup against our 28th prime minister.
The staffer’s brief celebrity was one of the stranger footnotes of that combustible September 2015, rivalled only by Jamie Briggs busting his knee in the post spill Bacchanalia in the defeated PMO.
In 2016, after another year on the staff of the then quasi opposition leader Abbott, Dowdy set off to chase his American Dream, first at Berkeley (where he picked up a Master of Laws), then at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison (one of New York’s better law firms where his clients included Pratt Industries and Peter Thiel’s investment firm Thiel Capital).
Now Dowdy — who is married to Kara Conran, assistant to Peta Credlin in the Abbott PMO and daughter of Scott Morrison’s former cabinet secretary Peter Conran — is working for Australia’s richest person.
The Australian diaspora in Manhattan was already pretty interesting.
Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who lives in a handsome Upper East Side brownstone, is presiding over the Asia Society, while the Turnbulls have a Manhattan pad on the other side of Central Park.
Malcolm and Lucy’s place is all of five minutes from where Dowdy now resides. No doubt their paths will cross again, although we hope in less charged circumstances than their infamous encounter on blue carpeted ministerial wing four years ago.
