National law firm Thomson Geer has made its third raid on the Queensland legal fraternity in over a decade, poaching the tech and cyber law team from a renowned practice.

Thomson Geer has signed up top Queensland based technology and cyber lawyer Hayden Delaney and his team of eight from HopgoodGanim.

The last of the group’s resignations were lodged with HopgoodGanim on Friday night.

Delaney, will join as partner, and he and his team will join Thomson Geer at their Waterfront Place office in the new year.

It is the third time Thomson Geer has picked up Queensland talent.

In 2011 the practice launched its Brisbane office with the recruitment of over half of the office of law firm DLA Phillips Fox including nine partners. Then in 2020 Thomson Geer secured all of the partners from Denton’s Brisbane office.

Thomson Geer chief executive partner Adrian Tembel says Delaney and his team are “first rate professionals”.

“We will back them to continue to support Queensland businesses and the growing Queensland economy,” he says. “But, we also believe Hayden and his team are national class.

“We plan on helping Hayden grow further across Australia. We know he and the team have a lot to offer in the south.”

As well as Delaney the team joining Thomson Geer will be partner Steven Hunwicks, special counsel Briar Francis, senior associate Hannah Fas, associates Sarah Buchanan, Thomas Copley and Monica Nery, lawyer Jacob Currie and paralegal Sarah Lucas.

The team advises on complex technology transactions, privacy, cyber security and data protection, intellectual property strategy and enforcement.

Delaney has been recognised in a number of legal directories including Best Lawyers in Australia for IP Law, Information Technology Law and Privacy and Data Security Law; Doyles Guide as a Leading Technology, Media and Telecommunications Lawyer in Brisbane and Queensland; and World Trademark Review’s WTR 1000 as one of the world’s leading trademark professionals.

Partnership

Mater and Bupa today announced a renewed hospital partnership.

The new three-year agreement was negotiated against a background of rising costs facing private hospitals.

Mater is Queensland’s largest not-for-profit health services provider and its new agreement with Bupa covers its network of 11 private hospitals, eight of which serve regional communities.

Bupa and Mater have agreed to work towards implementing an innovative virtual cardiac rehabilitation program for Bupa patients at Mater Private Hospital Townsville.

The new agreement will also support the launch of a short stay joint program at Mater Private Hospital Townsville.

Mater Health executive director Chris Went welcomed the signing of the new agreement with Bupa.

“We are pleased to have successfully reached a new agreement with Bupa,” she said.

“The agreement ensures Bupa customers will continue to benefit from Mater’s exceptional hospital care and will also allow us to develop innovative new services for regional patients.”

Bupa Health Insurance acting managing director Kate Williams said the partnership with Mater Health was a great example of private hospitals and private health insurers working together with a patient-first mindset.

“With cost-of-living pressures continuing to impact Australians, this partnership provides our customers with peace of mind knowing they’ll be covered at Mater hospitals,” she says.
