Glencore to cut 50 Queensland jobs

Miner flags job losses at Newlands coal mine as the operation nears the end of its mining life.

Glencore to cut 50 Queensland jobs

Glencore will halt development work at its Newlands Northern underground coal mine in eastern Australia by the end of June as the operation nears the end of its mining life, a move that will cost about 50 full-time jobs.

The miner said it had already begun consulting with workers about the changes to the mine, ahead of its closure by the end of next year. Production at the site in Queensland state will continue until the final volumes of coal have been extracted, it said.

Last June, Glencore moved to cut about 300 jobs at its Newlands mining operation and another 150 at its Oaky Creek mine in Queensland in response to higher production costs and weaker coal prices, part of a wave of job cuts and investment delays by mining companies after prices for the commodity fell.
