Endeavour Group to close Prowine bottling facility near Gawler

About 30 jobs will be affected by the decision to close a factory servicing SA’s iconic wine regions.

About 30 jobs in Adelaide’s north are in limbo following a decision to close a wine bottling facility near Gawler.

Prowine has operated as a specialist contract wine bottling and packaging facility since 2004, with two bottling lines and an on-site laboratory servicing customers across wine regions including the Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale.

Endeavour Group – the owner of Dan Murphy’s, BWS and ALH Hotels – acquired the facility in 2018 through subsidiary business Pinnacle Drinks.

An Endeavour Group spokeswoman said the decline in domestic wine consumption and a challenging export environment had led to the decision to consolidate the company’s bottling operations at its two other sites in Angaston and McLaren Vale.

“Following a review of our bottling capacity at our South Australian facilities, we have made a decision to close our Prowine facility in Gawler in March 2025, and we are working through a consultation period with impacted team members,” she said.

“Since Pinnacle Drinks acquired Prowine in 2018, their team and two-line facility have played a vital role in supporting our production, particularly during peak periods when Angaston and McLaren Vale were at capacity, helping meet growing business demand.

“However, given the decline in domestic consumption and the changing export market impacting overall demand, we can no longer maintain all three production sites.”

The spokeswoman said the company would work with around 30 affected staff in identifying other employment opportunities across the Endeavour Group network, while working with customers on transition arrangements.

“We will be working with customers to transition their volume to our other bottling facilities at Angaston and McLaren Vale where we have capacity and capability, and we will be supporting other impacted wineries to transition their volumes to other co-packers in the region,” she said.
