Virgin Australia has the go-ahead from the government for its sale of a 25 per cent stake to Qatar Airways. Now all the company needs is to appoint a permanent CEO following a search through executive firm Korn Ferry.

With chief customer and digital officer Paul Jones out of the running, Ed Sims could be the most likely candidate.

Mr Sims, a New Zealander, is a director of Virgin Australia and previously ran the Canadian carrier WestJet for four years.

Mr Jones was in line for the job after Virgin Australia’s Jayne Hrdlicka said she would step down as CEO following the death of her husband. He was the front runner for the role but withdrew following pressure from the Transport Workers Union and Employment Minister Murray Watt.

Virgin is now owned by Bain Capital, which purchased the carrier out of administration during the global pandemic.

The airline is now set to be relisted on the Australian Securities Exchange and has been slated for an initial public offering this year.

Star Entertainment

Friday marks the last day before the embattled Star Entertainment can report its results before it is forced to be suspended from trading. The company’s future hangs in the balance with large debt levels and fines looming.
