Deutsche analyst Emily Smith joins exodus as bank shuts equities unit

Investment banker and former building materials and industrial company analyst Emily Smith has left Deutsche Bank following the announcement by the German financial that it would shut its international equities operations.

It is understood that Ms Smith, who is highly regarded in her field, was assessing her next move following the departure and has had various approaches for new roles.

Most recently, her title was general industrials director, a role she has held for more than one year. Prior to that, she was a corporate broking and shareholder advisory director since January 2018.

She had been an equities analyst at Deutsche Bank between 2003 and 2017, covering industrial companies after working at rival Citi.

The departure is the latest involving Deutsche Bank staff, with at least 50 employees at the bank said to be in search of new roles.

Head of Australian financial industry group investment banking Sally Mihell recently left to become the National Australia Bank’s head of investor relations.

Various equities analysts left to join CLSA including Anthony Hoo and Ben Brownette and sales traders Anthony Goonan and Nathan Lewis.

Meanwhile, at UBS, Tom Bodor is returning to the Swiss bank to join the real estate equities research team.

Mr Bodor will work with Asia Pacific real estate equities research head Grant McCasker, based in Sydney.

Mr Bodor starts at the investment bank next week after working at Lendlease for seven years.

During the seven years at Lendlease, Mr Bodor worked in various areas, including group strategy and financial planning analysis.

Prior to that, he worked in the UBS equities research team in Sydney and London.

It is the third hire for UBS equities research outside of the investment research industry, with others including Tom Allen, who joins the utilities research team and Georgina Fraser who works in resources research.
