Citi’s head of Banking, Capital Markets and Advisory for Australia and New Zealand Alex Cartel has joined Rothschild & Co as its Australian head of global advisory.
He will begin at the firm in October as a managing director and will report to Rothschild partner and Australia chief executive Marshall Baillieu.
Mr Cartel has worked at Citi since 2020, with the Wall Street bank hiring the managing director from Deutsche Bank, where he had worked since 2000 with his most recent role being Co-Head of Corporate Finance for Australia.
He originally trained as a lawyer, working at Allens from 1994 to 2000.
Mr Cartel, from Melbourne, has been involved with BHP’s $9.6bn acquisition of Oz Minerals and Santos’ $22bn merger with Oil Search and has advised Unibail-Rodamco on its $US25bn takeover of Westfield.
In addition to his role as Citi’s vice chair for Japan, Australia and North Asia Cluster, Tony Osmond will take over Mr Cartel’s duties on an interim basis as a search remains underway for Mr Cartel’s successor.
The appointment comes after Rothschild Australia in November appointed Carolyn Kay as chairman.
