Australia Post is still battling widespread technology outages that brought down its parcel tracking and banking services on Friday morning.

The postal service said the retail impacts on its Bank@Post service had been restored, but customer notifications and parcel tracking are still impacted.

“We have experienced some technical issues today which have intermittently impacted some of our services,” an AusPost spokesman said.

“We’ll provide updates as details are confirmed and apologise for any inconvenience.”

Late on Friday the message was the same.

It is believed the issue with AusPost was caused by internal technical issues, not a malicious attack on the business.

“We’re currently experiencing technical issues which are intermittently impacting some of our services including Bank@Post at our post offices as well as customer notifications and parcel tracking,” Australia Post wrote on its website.

“We want to reassure customers that our posties and drivers are still out delivering your parcels and we’re working hard to resolve these issues as quickly as possible. We’ll provide updates as details are confirmed and apologise for the inconvenience.”

AusPost has been struggling with surging demand, with more than 2-million packages passing through its system each day.

The outages come 10 months after the Australian National Audit Office released a damning report about the government organisation’s management of cyber risks.

The outage follows the Australian National Audit Office singling out Australia Post for poor management of cyber risks, comparing the organisation with the Reserve Bank and ASC Pty Ltd, formerly the Australian Submarine Corporation

“The Reserve Bank and ASC have effectively managed cyber security risks. Australia Post has not effectively managed cyber security risks, and should continue to implement its cyber security improvement program and key controls across all its critical assets to enable cyber risks to be within its tolerance level,” ANOA said in its report.

“The Reserve Bank and ASC are cyber resilient, with high levels of resilience compared to 15 other entities audited over the past five years. Australia Post is not cyber resilient but is internally resilient, which is similar to many of the previously audited entities.

“The Reserve Bank has a strong cyber resilience culture, ASC is developing this culture, and Australia Post is working towards embedding a cyber resilience culture within its organisation.”
